SmartNode Proprietary Developments – Series Part 3 | SN-TELTONIKASMS module – reliable SMS alerts in Niagara environment

SmartNode’s in-house developments continue to evolve. We are constantly working on Niagara-based solutions that provide practical answers to real operational needs — whether it is alarm management, data collection or the integration of external systems.
In this article series, we present our in-house developed modules.
In the first part, we introduced the SN-SMSEagle module, which provides SMS-based notification integration in a Niagara environment.
In the second part, the SN-OPUS-API module was in focus. This solution supports the integration of real-time gas consumption data in Niagara and other BMS systems. The aim of the development is to help building operators monitor consumption data more transparently and use it more effectively in operational decision-making.
In the third part, we introduce the SN-TELTONIKASMS module, which provides a reliable SMS alerting option in a Niagara environment.
Why are SMS alerts still needed?
In building automation and industrial monitoring systems, fast response time is often critical. In the event of a mechanical fault, communication issue or critical alarm, it is not enough for the event to appear in the supervisory system — it must also reach the right person in time.
Although email and mobile app-based notifications are becoming increasingly common, SMS remains one of the most reliable and direct forms of communication in the operation of critical infrastructures.
This is why we developed the SN-TELTONIKASMS module, which enables the direct integration of the SMS functions of Teltonika RUT200 and RUT241 routers into the Niagara environment.
Native Niagara integration
With this solution, alarms from the Niagara system can be forwarded directly via SMS, even to multiple phone numbers at the same time.
The driver also supports the handling of different alarm states, such as Normal, Offnormal and Fault events. This allows the system to be flexibly adapted to the alarm logic of the given project.
The operation can be configured directly from the Niagara Workbench environment, so there is no need for external middleware or custom scripting. This not only simplifies commissioning, but also improves the long-term maintainability of the system.
Result: faster commissioning and a more transparent system architecture.
Reliable operation in case of network issues
Reliability is one of the most important aspects of critical notification systems.
For this reason, the SN-TELTONIKASMS module also provides queue management.
In the event of a connection issue:
SMS messages are not lost
messages are placed in a queue
once the connection is restored, they are sent automatically
the system maintains the correct sending order
This is particularly important in environments where the continuity of communication directly affects operational safety.
Fully customizable operation
Different projects require different alarm management logic, so the module can be configured at several points.
For example, the following can be customized:
SMS message text
phone number management
number of retry attempts
time interval between retry attempts
queue size
As a result, the system can be easily adapted to the requirements of the given project — whether it is a smaller mechanical system or a larger application involving critical infrastructure.
Router availabilty check
The module also includes the TeltonikaRouter component, which can check the availability of the router.
This function provides feedback on whether the router responds, allowing operators to identify communication problems or network errors more quickly.
It provides simpler diagnostics and more transparent monitoring during everyday operation.
